Privacy Policy

How the Talea app collects, uses and protects your information.

Last updated 23 July 2026

Who we are

Talea is a mobile app that digitises paper receipts. A shop's Talea box can send a receipt to your phone with an NFC tap, or you can scan a paper receipt yourself. The app gives you a searchable history, spending insights, invoices and quotes, and exports.

The app is provided by Talea Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom (“Talea”, “we”, “us”). We are the data controller for the personal data described here. For any privacy question, or to exercise your rights, contact us at info@trytalea.com.

Information we collect

  • Account information — your name and email address when you create an account, so we can sign you in and secure your account.
  • Receipt & financial data — the receipts you save or scan, including merchant, date, totals, tax and line items, so the app can store, search and analyse them for you.
  • Purchase information — your subscription status and history. Payments are handled by Apple; we receive confirmation of your subscription but never your full card details.
  • Usage & device data — app interactions and diagnostics used to run the app and keep it secure. The free app shows only non-personalised ads and does not use your device's advertising identifier or track you across apps or websites.

Scanning a receipt

When you scan a paper receipt, the photo is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, which reads the merchant, totals, tax and line items and returns them as structured text so the app can save the receipt for you. The image is processed only for that purpose and is not used to train AI models. Anthropic processes this in the United States — see “Who we share it with”.

Why we use it & our legal bases

Under UK GDPR we rely on the following bases. We use your data to provide the app and your account and to deliver and store your receipts (performance of our contract with you); to keep the service secure, prevent abuse and improve it, and to show non-personalised advertising in the free app (our legitimate interests — these ads do not use your advertising identifier and do not track you); and to meet legal obligations where the law requires. We do not sell or share your personal data.

Advertising

The free version of the app shows banner ads through Google AdMob. Talea serves non-personalised ads only: they are not based on your identity, your receipts or a profile of your behaviour, and we do not use your device's advertising identifier for cross-app or cross-site tracking. Because of this the app does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission. Non-personalised ads still use limited information such as approximate location (from IP) and the app context to show and measure a relevant-sized ad. Subscribing to Premium or Trader removes ads entirely.

Who we share it with

We share personal data only with the service providers that help us run Talea, and only as far as they need it to perform their service:

  • Supabase — provides our backend, authentication, database and storage, hosting your account and receipt data on our behalf.
  • Anthropic — reads the receipts you scan and returns the structured data (United States).
  • Google AdMob — delivers and measures non-personalised ads on the free app; we do not share your advertising identifier for cross-app tracking.
  • Apple — processes in-app subscription payments and provides App Store services.
  • RevenueCat — manages and validates your subscription entitlements.

Some of these providers process personal data outside the UK, including in the United States (for example Anthropic, and Google). International transfers of this kind require appropriate safeguards under UK data protection law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA) or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. We are putting these safeguards in place with our providers; ask us at the address above for the current status. We may also disclose information where the law requires it.

Retention

We keep your account and receipt data for as long as your account is active. Unclaimed receipts waiting to be paired to an account are short-lived and expire automatically. When you delete your account we delete your personal data, except where we must keep limited records to meet a legal obligation (for example tax or accounting rules), after which it is deleted too.

Deleting your account & data

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app: go to Profile › Delete account. This permanently removes your account, your saved receipts and your associated data from our systems. If you would prefer, you can also ask us to delete your data by emailing info@trytalea.com.

Children

Talea is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our use of your personal data, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, email info@trytalea.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

US & California residents

If you are a US resident, depending on your state (including California under the CCPA/CPRA) you may have the right to know, access, delete and correct your personal information, and to opt out of its “sale” or “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we serve only non-personalised ads, so there is nothing to opt out of; we honour recognised opt-out signals such as Global Privacy Control. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any right. To make a request, email info@trytalea.com.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a revised “last updated” date.
